On April 20, 2005, Word of
Mouth presented a letter to Oprah Winfrey thanking her for her
contribution to contemporary fiction, and asking her to consider
again, on contemporary fiction in her Book Club. This website was
created to allow all interested writers to join us in support of the letter.
the Oprah Winfrey
Oprah's Book Club began in 1996 and stopped
temporarily in 2002. From
1996 to 2002, the book club championed a wide variety of contemporary
fiction, introducing debut novels by promising young authors, while also
featuring works by some of America's best known and most cherished
its hiatus, Oprah's Book Club resumed in 2003 with a
focus on Great Books. In its
new form, the book club has invited readers to tackle classics of American
literature such as John Steinbeck's East of Eden; The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers; and the The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, the first
American woman to win the Nobel Prize.

has encouraged Americans to venture beyond American literature.
