        Word of Mouth
is an association founded to enable women authors to provide one another with friendship and professional support.  We have no hierarchy, no president or vice-president, and no membership fees or dues.   We meet to discuss our work and share our experiences as writers.

On April 20, 2005, Word of Mouth presented a letter to Oprah Winfrey thanking her for her contribution to contemporary fiction, and asking her to consider focusing, once again, on contemporary fiction in her Book Club.  This website was created to allow all interested writers to join us in support of the letter.

Information on the Oprah Winfrey Book Club

         Oprah
's Book Club began in 1996 and stopped temporarily in 2002.  From 1996 to 2002, the book club championed a wide variety of contemporary fiction, introducing debut novels by promising young authors, while also featuring works by some of America's best known and most cherished writers.

After its hiatus, Oprah
's Book Club resumed in 2003 with a focus on Great Books.  In its new form, the book club has invited readers to tackle classics of American literature such as John Steinbeck's East of Eden; The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers; and the The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize.

The club's Great Books series also has encouraged Americans to venture beyond American literature.  Selected novels include Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy; One Hundred Years of Solitude by Nobel Prize Laureate and contemporary Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez;  and Cry, the Beloved Country, the searing portrait of apartheid by South African writer Alan Paton.
